Fed: Labor still chasing Colston

Labor says it'll pursue the MAL COLSTON case despite the Director of Public Prosecutionstoday saying there's no prospect the former independent senator will ever face trial ontravel rorts charges.

The DPP dropped 28 travel rorts charges against 65-year-old Dr COLSTON in July, 1999,because he had terminal cancer.

A review of the case followed and today DPP DAMIAN BUGG, QC, says medical examinationsof Dr COLSTON have found he remains unfit to stand trial.

He says medical examinations have found he still has cancer of the bile ducts and hiscondition is deteriorating.

But federal Labor MP JOHN MURPHY says he was astounded, by the DPP's statement andhas vowed to canvass the matter when parliament resumes next week.

Dr COLSTON, who lives in Brisbane, left the Senate in July, 1999, after 24 years in parliament.

He had quit Labor in 1996 after failing to win party support for the deputy Senatepresidency and became an independent who supported the HOWARD government's bid to selloff the first third of Telstra.
